I have long wondered what happened to respecting the Office of the President of the United States of America. It seems like disrespecting the office, and its occupant, has become such an everyday occurrence in our country.

We have all been guilty of doing it, yours truly included. I remember thinking how stupid or dumb George W. Bush was as a President; I even had a daily calendar with some of his oddest quotes or as the calendar creator called them, Bushisms. Let me clarify one thing, even though I disagreed with almost everything he did and said I knew deep down that President Bush did what he thought was right and for the best of the country at the time. I also believe that some of his actions were based on inaccurate information, bad advice or following a hunch that was just off.

What are your Feelings on this Altercation?

  • I think Brewer was over the line
  • I think Obama deserved it
  • I really don't have an opinion

Altercation on the Tarmac Between Brewer and Obama

When I saw the photo of Arizona Governor Jan Brewer pointing her finger in the face of our current President Barack Obama I couldn’t believe it. It reminded me of all of the times being a naughty boy and getting scolded by my Mother or a school teacher. I was also confused by what she said later when talking to reporters, “I said to him that I have all the respect in the world for the office of the President. The book is what the book is. I asked him if he read the book, he said he read the excerpt.” If the Governor has all of the respect in the world for the office of the President I guess she doesn’t have to show the President that respect unless he is physically in the office?

Apparently the two politicians had a disagreement about what was said in Governor Brewer’s book “Scorpions for Breakfast: My Fight Against Special Interests, Liberal Media and Cynical Politicos to Secure America’s Border.” I have to be honest, I haven’t read the book or even seen it, but my first thought is how in the heck did she get that title to fit on the cover?

Seriously two politicians, one from each party, had an argument; big deal. Normally this wouldn’t have even made the news since this is what happens in Washington everyday. The only reason we heard about it was because of the finger pointing incident was caught on camera.

From what I have read Governor Brewer handed President Obama an invitation to meet privately to discuss the state of Arizona’s ongoing battle with illegal immigration. The President countered that their last meeting wasn’t accurately portrayed in her book and their conversation went downhill from there.

Obviously we, as the general public, will probably never know exactly what was said between the two politicians. All we will hear is what they decide we need to hear.

What Happened to Civil Political Discourse?

Personally I do not need to know exactly what was said between them. I’m just stuck wondering how our political system has become so vile and mean spirited. I firmly believe that the cable news programs have a big hand in it. Both sides of the political aisle have news networks, which slant to one side, where their programming focuses on those positions. The reporters and talking heads are employed to come up with what ever angle they can to cater to their audience and it can be incredibly negative and most of the time inaccurate. They have learned what kind of news sells and they have gotten very good at using it.

I really miss civil discourse; what happened to agreeing to disagree? Just because we do not agree on a particular issue doesn’t mean that we are not American’s and do not love our country; we just have different views on how to get from point A to point B. Let’s stop the immature name calling, figure pointing or whatever and try to set good examples for our children on how adults should act.

First of all, Jan Brewer, really? She's probably angry because her state is trying to recall her. And then again she does come from the party of "You Lie". They think if they look tough and sound tough, it earns them points, when in reality it makes them look arrogant and classless. In their ignorance maybe the forgot the "Salute the uniform". They may not like the President, but he is the man in charge and they should respect the position.

strange comment above! I was going to say the hateful rhetoric comes from the left! This started after the Gifford incident and the blaming Sarah for the shooting! Then we find out those crosshairs meant targeting areas for voters! Later we hear Hoffa say lets take these sonafabitches out! We hear Maxine say the Tea Party can go to hell and she would help them! Our best Presidents were tough, our forefathers said we don't talk with our enemies we KILL THEM! Reagan was tough, Bush was tough, I prefer men over the lieing out of touch candy asses running the Democrat side! ...........Want Bush protecting you or Barney Frank and his life partner????

I love how Liberals and Conservatives keep slinging mud at each other by saying "you lie". They all ******* lie. It's a foregone conclusion, say something more in depth. And on the "respect the position" line, you know damn well you didn't respect it when Bush was in office, so why should Conservatives respect it when Obama is. I'm neither Rep or Dem wholly by any means, but common sense is common sense, those arguments are old news.

It doesn't matter what the disagreement is, political views and/or "ranking" in the world. Putting your finger in anyone's face is rude and disrespectful. Adults expect children to have manners, and adults don't have any manners.

Thanks for insulting Democrats as a whole and Franks' sexuality validating the point of my hub.

You don't know me so don't assume you know who and what I respect. As I mentioned above I didn't think much of Bush but I never doubted that he thought his actions were the best for our country.

Apparently she talks with her hands so that is the reason why. I talk with my hands too but I don't include finger pointing in my hand talking.

rdick23, having served this country, yes respect has been given to the President, whether I liked him or not. @ American romance, once again, I can always count on your to justify the GOP rhetoric, but such a homophobe comment there at the end.

The sad truth both the Democrats and the Republicans have lost all sense of civility and courtesy. Our nation as a whole has done the same thing. Everybody needs to learn how to discuss and resolve differences, and short of that, how to agree to disagree, without such lavish displays of rudeness and hatefullness. What has happened to good old fashioned manners?

jjs - unfortunately civil disagreements are few and far between. No wonder so many people are disgusted with politics in our country.
